A Note from DKFI Teacher Mme Lahlou
I have been spending a lot of time exploring the internet to give you resources that you can use to help your child progress in reading in French. Here is what I have collected so far for you. PLEASE have a look, and start making reading in French a daily activity for your child. Research shows that even 10 minutes of reading outside of the classroom can make a real difference. One study shows that students who read outside of class are 13 times more likely to read above grade level- that is a huge difference! I will continue to add resources as I find them this year; please let me know of any others that you already use, and I will add them to this list! Merci beaucoup!

Books & Story TimeRead AlongPortail Stéphyprod
This website has a collection of stories and songs read/sung and presented in a cartoon format. You can have your child listen to and read the text at the same time, or you can mute the audio so that your child can read on his own. Often it is beneficial to listen to the story first, and then to read it alone with the audio turned off. Lire & RéCréer This website, has several stories in French with some simple illustrations. Have your child start at the "4 ans" section, and move up if he or she seems to find it too easy. Lire & RéCréer: Fables The same website as above-the "fables" section. Definitely a higher level, however there is benefit in challenging oneself. MinEdition Several children’s books in French- click on the cover of the book, and then on “Pour feuilleter le livre”. No audio, however I still suggest using this! If there is no option, “pour feuilleter le livre,” that means that they are not offering the text online at this time. Il Était Une Histoire To access the “read aloud” function, you need to create an account. Let Google translate the page for you, and then have your child help you fill the information out. It allows children to choose what type of story they want to read (on the left hand side, on the hanging signs) and then select a story. Once your child chooses a story, I suggest having him or her click on "lire l'histoire avec un aide" on the right-hand side (read the story with help). Stories with Activities or VideosMonde des Tintouins
Stories told with animations; the text does not appear on the video, but rather is underneath on webpage. Tumble Biblio Enfants TONS of children's book online- click on the image of the book, and then click on "Regarder en ligne" Audio of the books available. Carmen à la Campagne Click on “Centre Soleil” and then on the bookshelf on the right-hand side, “Lis avec Carmen.” Choose a book. Click on “lire” to have the story read, and then “apprendre” afterwards to see some of the more difficult vocabulary explained through animations. La Souris Qui Raconte Over 40 books with audio accompanying the text- some of them are interactive. I suggest starting with the category “5-6 ans”. |
ActivitiesOnline
Abracadabra
This is an AWESOME website. Have your child click on "zone enfant." They can choose between letter/sound/syllable type activities, reading with help (they can click on individual words that they are not sure of and it will read it for them), reading comprehension activities (AFTER having read the story), and writing practice (4 levels). Be careful, for several of the activities, your child has to click on both the activity they want ("activités") AND the story that they want ("livres"). They then need to click on the "OK" on the yellow bookbag in the bottom right corner. Rayon de Livres de Bop (Ottawa Public Library) Games/activities geared towards earlier stages of reading.
